Fire drama at Heathrow Terminal 5 as ground vehicle erupts in flames near British Airways plane
Flames and thick black smoke billowed into the sky at Heathrow Terminal 5 after a ground vehicle caught fire beside a British Airways Airbus A320. The blaze, shooting out from mobile stairs attached to the aircraft’s tail, sparked chaos at one of the world’s busiest airports.
Smoke seen across terminal buildings
The towering column of smoke was visible from multiple terminals, sending alarm through the airport. Firefighters raced to the scene, dousing the flames with water jets just yards from the terminal building itself.
No passengers onboard during blaze
Heathrow Airport confirmed the plane, registered G-EUYO and built in 2003, had no passengers aboard. It had recently landed from Athens at 5:14 PM before the incident unfolded.
The mobile stairs on fire belong to DHL, who handle some of British Airways’ ground operations like short-haul catering. Flames appeared to start from the driver’s compartment, likely the engine area of the vehicle.
A British Airways spokesperson said, “Emergency services quickly extinguished a small fire on a third-party ground vehicle. No customers were impacted, and there were no injuries.”
Investigation underway as airport gets back to normal
Authorities are probing the fire’s cause and checking for any airport disruptions. Thanks to a swift emergency response, the blaze was brought under control quickly, keeping chaos to a minimum at the bustling terminal.
