Record-Breaking Heatwave Blasts Southern Europe
A blistering heatwave is frying southern Europe and northwest Africa, with temperatures set to smash records. Spain, France, Greece, Croatia, and Turkey are hitting scorching highs above 40°C (104°F). Italy faces the worst, potentially roasting under a brutal 48.8°C (119.8°F) blast.
Ten Italian cities including Rome, Bologna, and Florence are under red alert warnings as the swelter intensifies.
Heatwave Already Claims Life in Italy
Tragedy has struck amid the blazing heat. A man in his forties collapsed while painting zebra crossings in Lodi, near Milan. Rushed to hospital, he sadly died from heat-related causes.
Nicola Fratoianni, Italian politician, warned on Twitter of the “unbearable heatwave” and urged the public to take precautions during the hottest hours to avoid further deaths.
Health Warnings Amid Tropical Temperatures
Health officials are scrambling to beat the heat. They urge everyone to gulp down at least two litres of water daily and to steer clear of dehydrating drinks like coffee and alcohol.
Australian tourists in Rome have been caught off guard by the intense heat, scrambling to adapt their sightseeing plans.
Cerberus Heatwave Brings Inferno-Like Temperatures
The so-called Cerberus heatwave, named after Dante’s mythical three-headed dog, is unleashing fiery conditions across the region. Spain has already sizzled through days hitting 45°C (113°F), with nights stubbornly hot above 25°C (77°F). On Majorca, the mercury hit 37°C (98°F) at 4 am, proving the heatwave shows no mercy.
Emergency services are buckling under the pressure. The Andalusian government’s helpline has taken over 54,000 calls since early June. Meanwhile, Majorca’s health hotline reports more than one daily case of heatstroke since May.
