UK Fugitive Benjamin Macann Nabbed in Bulgaria
Benjamin Macann, 32, was busted at a hotel in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, yesterday. Police found him carrying a fake passport and a genuine one in someone else’s name.
Massive Cross-Border Sting Nets Drug Suspect
Macann’s arrest came after a joint operation by the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA), Bulgarian police, and the Spanish Guardia Civil. The fugitive was on the run after being named in the NCA’s Most Wanted campaign back in January, targeting 12 criminals believed to be hiding in Spain.
Charged with Supplying Kilos of Cocaine
Norfolk Police want Macann for conspiracy to supply class A drugs. He allegedly moved multiple kilogrammes of cocaine in 2020, using encrypted phones with his gang. Macann is originally from Beetley, Dereham, Norfolk.
He’s the fifth fugitive caught from the Most Wanted list since the campaign launched. Macann is now in custody, awaiting extradition.
Law Enforcement Praise Teamwork Behind the Bust
“Benjamin Macann’s arrest was made possible thanks to brilliant work by our international liaison officers, the Guardia Civil fugitives team, Bulgarian Police, and our counterparts in Bulgaria,” said Steve Reynolds, NCA regional manager in Spain.
“Macann is the fifth person apprehended from the Most Wanted list. We won’t stop until the last of them are caught.”
“We keep working with partners worldwide to track down our most dangerous offenders,” added Detective Sergeant Eddie Hammond of Norfolk and Suffolk’s Serious Organised Crime Unit.
“Their ongoing hard work proves there’s no safe place to hide for criminals.”
Lord Ashcroft, founder of Crimestoppers, said: “Our charity supports anonymous tips to help catch fugitives. It’s great news another fugitive has been caught thanks to our Most Wanted campaign with the NCA.”
