NCA Takes Over Shocking South Yorkshire Police Abuse Probe

The National Crime Agency (NCA) has swooped in to take control of the investigation into historic sexual abuse allegations against former South Yorkshire Police officers. This move comes after a formal request by South Yorkshire Police and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

Three ex-officers have already been arrested in this high-profile case, prompting calls for greater public confidence and better victim support.

Background of the Investigation

The probe focuses on disturbing claims of sexual abuse dating back years. A dedicated team from South Yorkshire Police’s Major Crime Unit has been working under the IOPC’s direction to get to the bottom of the allegations.

South Yorkshire Police confirmed today (Friday 8 August) that the NCA has now taken over operational control. The IOPC remains the overall authority but NCA investigators will lead the day-to-day work.

The NCA brings strong experience, having led Operation Stovewood — a long-running inquiry into organised child sexual exploitation in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013.

Top Brass Stress Victims Are Priority

Assistant Chief Constable Hayley Barnett, the force’s gold commander for the operation, said:

“Victim survivors have steadfastly remained our number one priority. While our culture and workforce have changed dramatically since the historic failings in Rotherham, we recognise that our involvement may be a barrier for some survivors.”

“Concerns around the mode of investigation have put the force, not the survivors, at the centre of the narrative — this is not acceptable. The decision to hand over this to the NCA is simply the right thing to do.”

“This change is not a reflection of our confidence in our investigative team, but rather a reflection of our responsibility to do what’s best for survivors.”

Barnett acknowledged the ongoing trauma many survivors endure and emphasised that rebuilding victim trust and public confidence were key to the handover.

Where Victims Can Get Help and Report Abuse

South Yorkshire Police urge anyone affected by sexual abuse — recent or historic — to come forward now. Here’s how you can report or seek support:

  • Report directly: Call 101 or visit the South Yorkshire Police website.
  • Alternative options include:
    • National Crime Agency
    • Hackenthorpe Lodge (local Sexual Assault Referral Centre – SARC)
    • Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC)
    • Crimestoppers’ Police Anti-Corruption and Abuse Reporting Service

The NCA takeover signals a fresh start for a tough investigation — but it’s clear the real focus is always on the survivors.
