John Siddell, 41, was sentenced to 15 years in prison after pretending to be mute and wheelchair-bound to evade justice for sexual offences against three young boys committed between 2018 and 2021. His elaborate ruse was uncovered by police after evidence from social media, CCTV footage, and photos showed him walking unaided and enjoying nights out in Newcastle.

Elaborate Disability Hoax

Siddell convinced psychiatrists he was unfit to stand trial by fabricating severe disabilities, including being unable to speak, walk, open his eyes, or hold his head up. This attempt to dodge prison by gaining sympathy failed when his double life was exposed.

Contradictory Evidence Emerges

Footage and images revealed Siddell attending social events such as Elvis Presley nights, watching Newcastle United matches, and drinking Guinness at pubs, completely contradicting his claimed disabilities.

Brother Also Charged

John’s brother James was charged alongside him for perverting the course of justice. Both admitted to misleading the court and failing to attend a plea hearing, citing a supposed seizure that was part of the deception.

Judge Denounces Deception

Sentencing the pair, Judge Keith Raynor described their actions as “scheming and devious,” stating they “entirely corrupted and undermined the course of justice” by misrepresenting John’s condition.

Defence Highlights Vulnerability

Defence lawyer Jamie Adams acknowledged Siddell’s diagnoses of epilepsy, autism, and learning disabilities but confirmed these did not justify his criminal behaviour or fraud upon the court.
