Police dog Skye, a six-year-old fox red Labrador trained to detect illegal drugs, visited Saltash Community School on 22 June with handler PC Steve Waters. The visit aimed to educate pupils about the dangers of drug use and discourage illegal activity within the community. Officers conducted passive classroom searches to demonstrate Skye’s skills and talked to students about the consequences of drug possession.

Live Drug Sniffing Demo

Students lined up to pass Skye with their bags, allowing the dog to showcase her sniffing abilities. This hands-on approach helped drive home the risks associated with drug use by engaging pupils directly.

Police Emphasise Education

PC Steve Waters highlighted that the visit focused on raising awareness rather than enforcement. “We want to encourage young people to make safe, informed decisions that keep them away from drug use, antisocial behaviour and crime,” he said. No drugs were found during the visit and school staff reported no issues.

Ongoing Local Efforts

Saltash police continue addressing drug concerns through targeted patrols, plainclothes operations and issuing warrants. Skye’s visits form part of wider efforts to reduce drug supply and use in the area.

How To Report Drug Crime

Residents are urged to report illegal drug activity via the police website or by calling 101. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crimestoppers.
