‘One Man Crime Wave’ Jailed for Burglaries and Sword Attack in W9

Philip Oyelade, 40, a violent career criminal with no fixed address, was locked up for three-and-a-half years at Southwark Crown Court on Tuesday, 22 September.

Crime Spree Caught on CCTV

Oyelade pleaded guilty to a slew of charges including burglary, assault, possession of offensive weapons, drugs offences, and public order violations.

He targeted homes and garages across the W9 area, striking in broad daylight.

On 10 August 2019, Oyelade and a still-unknown accomplice broke into a house on Edbrooke Road, snatching £20,000 worth of valuables like laptops and handbags. The break-in caused £5,000 in damage and was caught in full on CCTV.

Arrested Red-Handed

On 19 November 2019, Oyelade was spotted burgling a private garage on Barnwood Close. The owner confronted him and police from the Territorial Support Group arrested Oyelade on the spot. They had been hunting him for a series of burglaries in the area.

His crime spree included three more residential burglaries and another commercial break-in, all within a frantic two-month window before his arrest.

Violent and Dangerous

Oyelade also admitted assaulting a youth worker on 19 July 2019 at a youth centre on Clearwell Drive, where he headbutted the victim and waved a samurai sword about. CCTV footage captured the shocking attack.

He was caught with a Class B drug on him and guilty of hurling homophobic abuse at officers during his arrest, a public order offence.

“It would not be an exaggeration to describe Phillip Oyelade as a one man crime wave in the W9 postcode,” said Detective Constable Sam Ekeocha from the Central West BCU’s CID team. “He is a violent man who did not think twice about breaking into people’s homes in broad daylight. It was the bravery of the residents, workers and police officers of the W9 area which led to his arrest and subsequent conviction.”
