Tragic Fire Rips Through Southwark Flat

A 16-year-old football star known as Tommy Ballay-Dean, or Junior Dean, has tragically died in a devastating flat fire in Southwark, London. The blaze erupted around 3pm Wednesday on the first floor of a block of flats right next door to a fire station.

The London Fire Brigade sent four fire engines and 25 firefighters to battle the flames. Another teenage boy, Tommy’s friend, managed to escape but was rushed to hospital with severe facial injuries and remains in a coma.

Community Mourns “Heart and Soul” of Southwark

Junior Dean was a talented footballer and a beloved figure in his community. Tributes poured in from his clubs, family, and friends after news of his death broke.

“Junior was the heart and soul of Southwark Residents and a cherished member of the wider Southwark community. His faith and talent stood out,” said organisers of a fundraiser set up to support his family with funeral costs.

His former coach, Hudayfi Awale, shared a heartfelt tribute on social media:

“A top footballer, but an even better kid. You lit up every room you walked into, always smiling, always making people laugh. Rest in eternal peace, Junior. We’ll make sure your legacy lives on forever.”

Harrowing Scenes as Friends and Neighbours React

Neighbours reported hearing desperate cries as the fire raged.

  • 86-year-old Loreen Williams said, “There was a young guy shouting ‘There’s somebody still in the building.’”
  • Local mum Elizabeth Coleman added, “My son saw a boy on the floor shouting ‘my friend is still inside.”

Police and Fire Brigade Investigate Cause

The London Fire Brigade’s Fire Investigation Unit and the Metropolitan Police are probing the cause, though police currently believe the fire to be non-suspicious.

A Met Police spokesperson confirmed:

“A 16-year-old boy was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. His next-of-kin are being supported by specially trained officers. Another 16-year-old boy is in hospital with serious facial injuries.”

A fundraiser has been launched to help Junior’s family through this heartbreaking time.
