Operation Brock clamps down on Kent traffic chaos amid Channel disruption
Operation Brock is on full alert to keep Kent moving when chaos hits the Channel. The scheme gears up to tackle any blockages caused by reduced ferry capacity at the Port of Dover.
When the Channel closes or slows, lorries stack up on the M20 with nowhere to go. Operation Brock switches things up, using the coastbound carriageway between Junctions 8 and 9 to queue EU-bound freight. Trucks are then released as space opens up at Dover or the Eurotunnel.
Not only that, lorries also queue in the coastbound contraflow as part of the plan to manage the gridlock.

Local Diversion Route: Avoid the M20 Snarl-Up
Follow the hollow circle diversion signs on local roads
- Exit the M20 at Junction 8 and take the 2nd exit at the roundabout onto the A20 eastbound towards Ashford.
- Follow the A20 through Harrietsham, Lenham, and Charing to the Drovers roundabout. Take the 1st exit to continue on the A20 towards the M20.
- At the M20 Junction 9 roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto the M20 coastbound to resume your journey.
EU freight traffic must leave the M20 at Junction 8 and rejoin via the entry slip road at the same junction.
Expect delays if you’re travelling this way. Plan ahead, consider alternate routes or delay your trip to dodge the jam.
