Hero Police and Firefighters Rescue Baby Locked in House with Cooker Left On
A heart-stopping drama unfolded today in Croydon when police guarding a crime scene on Canterbury Road, Thornton Heath, dashed to save a baby trapped inside a house with a cooker still on.
Officers Spring Into Action
The distressed man alerted officers that a baby was locked in a nearby home. Quick as a flash, one officer sprinted from the crime scene while backup police cars swarmed the area.
Fire Brigade Breaks In Within Minutes
The 1 Fire Brigade arrived in roughly five minutes. Firefighters heard the infant girl crying inside and used a hydraulic door ram to gain safe entry, ensuring the child was rescued unharmed.
Witness Details Intense Rescue
A bystander described the frantic scenes: “Two police officers were approached by someone who said a mum had locked herself out with her baby inside. Me and a female cop ran over. I had to look after her little son while the rescuers got to work. They had everyone down here in minutes.”
He added, “Local officers tried to use the battering ram first, but then the TSG arrived and brought out the hydraulic door ram – like the ones used for drug raids – to safely break in.”
CCTV Footage Captures the Incident
Sid Shahid, owner of the Canterbury Road site housing Rainbow Motors and other car businesses, revealed some of the 16 CCTV cameras caught the rescue. He said police initially contacted him about a suspected attack at the location the previous night.
Fortunately, the baby was unharmed and police returned swiftly to their duties at the nearby Lombard Roundabout crime scene.
