UK’s Top Airports Miss Deadline to Scrap Annoying 100ml Liquid Rule
Heathrow, Gatwick, and Manchester airports have missed the government’s June 1, 2024 deadline to install high-tech CT scanners. These scanners are needed to ditch the pesky 100ml liquid limit in hand luggage. Gatwick and Manchester now push their completion to 2025, while Heathrow hasn’t even set a date yet.
Tech Upgrade Means More Liquids—Finally!
The government first ordered the new CT scanners in December 2022. They produce detailed 3D images of your bags, allowing travellers to carry up to two litres of liquids on board. Say goodbye to annoying travel-sized bottles.
The current 100ml rule has been grinding down passengers since 2006, put in place after terrorist threats. Travellers have had to pack tiny amounts of liquids separately in clear plastic bags for nearly two decades.
Progress at Gatwick, But Delays at Heathrow & Manchester
Gatwick claims “significant progress” with its scanner installation in both terminals, aiming to finish after the summer rush in early 2025.
Meanwhile, Heathrow remains vague on timing, and Manchester lags behind with its upgrade also set for next year.
London City and Teesside Show How It’s Done
London City Airport scrapped the 100ml limit back in April 2023 after fitting these advanced scanners. Teesside International Airport has also installed them, setting a standard for others.
The delays show how tough it is to modernise airport security while keeping things smooth and safe for travellers.
