Royal Mail Slapped with £21 Million Fine Over Shoddy Mail Delivery

Royal Mail has been hit with a whopping £21 million fine by Ofcom after failing miserably on mail delivery targets. In the 2024-25 financial year, just 77% of first-class and 92.5% of second-class post arrived on time — a far cry from the company’s own goals of 93% and 98.5% respectively.

Ofcom Labels Royal Mail’s Failures ‘Persistent and Unacceptable’

“Millions of important letters are arriving late, and people aren’t getting what they pay for when they buy a stamp. These persistent failures are unacceptable, and customers expect and deserve better. Royal Mail must rebuild consumers’ confidence as a matter of urgency. And that means making actual significant improvements, not more empty promises,”

said Ian Strawhorne, Ofcom’s director of enforcement.

Royal Mail Pledges to Fix Mess Amid Heavy Criticism

Facing the backlash, Royal Mail admitted the fine and vowed to improve. A spokesperson said:

“We acknowledge the decision made by Ofcom today and we will continue to work hard to deliver further sustained improvements to our quality of service. A key focus is our new delivery model, made possible by Ofcom’s recent changes to the universal service. We’re investing in recruiting, training, and supporting our teams across the network.”

Trials with the new delivery system have reportedly shown progress in some parts of the UK.

Big Changes on the Horizon — Will They Work?

Ofcom has approved Royal Mail’s plan to ditch Saturday deliveries for second-class letters, switching to every other weekday instead. However, first-class post must still be delivered six days a week, and second-class letters must arrive within three days.

Christmas Crisis? Royal Mail Brings in 20,000 Temp Workers to Bail Out Holiday Deliveries

With Christmas looming, Royal Mail is going all out to avoid a festive delivery meltdown. The firm plans to hire a massive 20,000 temporary workers between late October and early January. They’ll be stationed across parcel hubs, sorting centres, and mail centres nationwide to handle Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and the Christmas rush.

Royal Mail’s slip-ups have left customers furious, but with fresh investment and a seasonal workforce boost, the postal giant hopes to dodge chaos this Christmas.
