Psych Patient Dies After Taking Poisonous Powder Ordered Online

A tragic inquest has revealed how 26-year-old Beth Matthews died after consuming a toxic substance she ordered online, believing it was just protein powder. The incident happened last March at a secure psychiatric hospital in Stockport.

Bright Mental Health Blogger’s Death Shocks Hospital

Originally from Cornwall, Beth was described in court as “bright and vivacious.” She was a popular mental health blogger with thousands of followers, known for her open discussions about recovery and mental wellbeing.

At the time, Beth was being treated for a personality disorder on a secure ward at The Priory, Cheadle Royal.

Poisonous Parcel Brought to Hospital Ward

On March 21, paramedics were called after Beth overdosed on a substance delivered by post. Assistant Coroner Andrew Bridgman told the jury: “She ingested a substance that came through the post, quite quickly became unwell, was taken urgently to hospital, where she sadly died.”

Paramedic Kate Barnes gave evidence saying Beth opened the package in front of staff and consumed its contents. The parcel contained a “small plastic, screw top container” with a mysterious powder marked by foreign writing. Beth reportedly insisted it was protein powder.

Patients were allowed to open their own post but only under staff supervision. The substance had been bought online, according to the inquest.

Family Pay Tribute to ‘Outstanding Personality’

Beth’s mother Jane gave a heartfelt statement. She called her daughter “an incredible character” who “lit up the lives” of everyone she met.

Jane also praised Beth’s sporting talents, recalling that she excelled in sailing and completed the demanding Fastnet race at just 15.

Sadly, Beth had suffered life-changing injuries after a suicide attempt in 2019. She had since inspired many by sharing her journey on social media and helping others who reached out to her.

Inquest Continues

The inquest into Beth Matthews’ death remains open, with a conclusion expected next week.
