New Exhibition Celebrates 80 Years of African Caribbean Life in St Albans
A groundbreaking new exhibition, “Becoming Us: African Caribbean St Albans,” has opened at St Albans Museum + Gallery. It shines a spotlight on the remarkable contributions of the African Caribbean community to St Albans, Hertfordshire, spanning eight decades. Co-curated by Leeannas Wish and Active Lifestyles, the exhibition celebrates heritage, inspires future generations, and promotes understanding across diverse communities.

Running until June 30, 2024, this free exhibition in the Keeper’s Galleries delves deep into the years from 1948 to 1971, while also honouring those who lived in St Albans before this period and spotlighting achievements up to today. Visitors will journey through themes including:

Community Voices Bring Stories to Life
The museum teamed up with local residents, holding workshops to collect oral histories, digital images, and artefacts. These community contributions have been crucial in creating a rich, authentic display of lives and legacies.

Step Back into the 1970s
Visitors can immerse themselves in a recreated 1970s West Indian front room, filled with original ornaments and furniture loaned by local residents. Plus, curated playlists and family tree activities offer a unique chance to connect with this vibrant heritage.
Shelley Hayles, Director of Leeannas Wish, highlighted the importance of the display in recognising diverse achievements across education, culture, business, and civic life. Catherine Newley, Audience Development Manager at St Albans Museums, praised the power of community partnerships in creating inclusive exhibitions that truly resonate.
