Medway Council cracks down on events amid coronavirus fears

Medway Council is prioritising residents’ essential services and wellbeing during the coronavirus outbreak. While most council sites remain open, major events and group activities are getting the chop to curb COVID-19 spread.

Big events cancelled until June

In line with government advice, Medway Council has axed all major events and shows at The Brook and Central Theatres in Chatham through the end of June. This includes:

  • Big Splash – 4 April
  • English Festival – 18 April
  • Sweeps – 2 & 3 May
  • Focus On Rainham – 16 May
  • Cycling Festival – 13 to 21 June
  • Dickens Festival – 13 & 14 June
  • Armed Forces Day – 27 June
  • Focus On Walderslade – 28 June

There are no plans to reschedule these events. Ticket holders will be contacted soon.

Libraries, museums, and community hubs tighten restrictions

All library and community group activities are cancelled until the end of June. Museums, archives, and heritage sites have also suspended group events. However, the venues remain open to visitors.

Leisure centres are still open, and group fitness classes continue as normal.

Adult education and council services update

Medway Adult Education classes are cancelled through June. Those booked will be contacted directly. Meanwhile, all other council services continue, with regular reviews to follow the latest government advice and Public Health England guidance.

Know the coronavirus symptoms – and stay home if you spot them

  • A high temperature – feeling hot to touch on chest or back
  • A new, continuous cough – repeated coughing spells

If you show symptoms, stay home for 7 days. If others live with you, they must self-isolate for 14 days from the first symptoms.

Council says: “The health and wellbeing of our residents remain our top priority as we tackle coronavirus together.”
