A free VPN app is secretly spying on users’ screens and wiping out their bank accounts. Modpro IP TV + VPN, downloaded by over 3,000 people, hides a dangerous malware called Klopatra, cybersecurity firm Cleafy has revealed.
Malware Takes Remote Control to Swipe Your Banking Details
Cleafy warns that Klopatra has evolved into a dangerous spy tool. It now remotely controls infected devices to steal sensitive banking info. The malware tricks users into granting it Android Accessibility Services permission, which is meant to help disabled users but becomes a weapon in hackers’ hands.
“Accessibility Services are designed to help users with disabilities by allowing apps to read screen content and perform actions for the user. In the hands of malware, this becomes a weapon.”
How Klopatra Sneaks Into Your Phone
Klopatra first appeared in 2021 and has since been tweaked over 40 times to dodge detection. It originated in Turkey and, unlike many threats, spreads mainly through malicious websites rather than official app stores.
Is Your Phone Hacked? Watch for These Warning Signs
- Battery problems: Sudden drain could mean malware working behind the scenes.
- Data surge: Unexpected spikes might show hackers stealing your information.
- Slow phone performance: Malware hogs your device’s resources, dragging it down.
- Unknown apps: Apps you don’t recall installing are a major red flag.
Think twice before downloading any free VPN app! Stay vigilant and keep your bank details safe.
