Hero trio’s quick action saves man after heart attack crash in Portsmouth
Two drivers and a man have been hailed heroes after they battled to save a man who suffered a suspected heart attack behind the wheel and crashed into railings on Winston Churchill Avenue, Portsmouth, on Monday evening.
Good Samaritans spring into action
The drama unfolded just after 7.30pm when the driver suddenly lost control of his car. A Mountjoy employee, working for Portsmouth City Council, was heading home with a friend after an out-of-hours call when they spotted the crash. Along with a former nursing assistant, the trio rushed to the trapped driver’s aid.
CPR saves critical driver
Passersby described the trio’s courageous efforts as “heroic.” They smashed the back window to drag the driver out and performed CPR for around ten minutes before emergency services arrived. Their quick thinking kept the man alive.
Emergency services close road for investigation
The seriously ill driver was rushed to hospital where he remains in critical but stable condition, according to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police. Roads Policing officers from Havant conducted a collision investigation while the road was closed for hours.
Fire crews from nearby Southsea station also attended, ensuring the vehicle and surrounding area were secured.
