Engine Failure Forces Evacuation of 80-Strong Chain Ferry on Lake Windermere
A chain ferry carrying around 80 passengers was forced to stop and evacuate after suffering engine failure on Lake Windermere today. The drama unfolded just after 12.45pm on 27 May, sparking a swift multi-agency rescue operation.
Coastguard and Rescue Teams Rush to the Scene
HM Coastguard wasted no time, dispatching Arnside, Morecambe, and Furness Coastguard Rescue Teams alongside the Ulverston independent lifeboat. The Lake Wardens, Cumbria Fire & Rescue, Cumbria Police, and North West Ambulance also joined efforts to ensure everyone’s safety.
Passengers Safely Evacuated, No Injuries Reported
All passengers were safely taken ashore by a nearby vessel. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported. The Maritime & Coastguard Agency’s duty surveyor was notified and has mandated the ferry be taken out of service until a full investigation determines the cause and impact of the failure.
Temporary Repairs Allow Ferry to Return to Shore
An engineer carried out quick interim repairs, enabling the chain ferry to return to the dock. All vehicles have now been removed from the ferry safely.
