A Leeds man has been locked up for nearly seven years after a deadly crash claimed his passenger’s life. Nicolae Subtirel, 27, sped along a 30mph road at more than double the limit, killing his friend and leaving others seriously injured.
Deadly Crash on Leeds’ A58
On 17 October 2022, police were called to a smash on Wetherby Road in Scarcroft involving a silver Vauxhall Zafira and a blue Honda CR-V. Petru Serban, 35, riding shotgun in the Zafira, was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after. The driver of the Honda and another passenger in the Zafira suffered broken bones and other injuries. Investigators used CCTV footage to track the vehicles’ movements before the crash and uncovered shocking details.
Speeding at 70mph in a 30mph Zone
Detectives found that Subtirel had been driving at around 70mph on a 30mph road just before the collision. The reckless speed caused the fatal crash, with serious consequences for everyone involved.
Harsh Sentence for Dangerous Driving
At Leeds Crown Court, Subtirel pleaded guilty to causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving. He was sentenced to six years and nine months behind bars, plus a driving ban lasting nine and a half years.
Detective Constable Chris Todhunter said: “This case shows the deadly risks of speeding. In prison and for the rest of his life, Subtirel must live with the knowledge that he killed his friend and colleague. Multiple families have been devastated by his choice that morning. I hope the public see that justice has been done.”
