Man Caught with Over £300k in Cash in Kent Car Stop
A man was busted with a staggering £314,885 in cash stashed in a hire car he was driving in Deal. Ricky Lewis, 35, was snapped by officers after they noticed his Renault Clio suspiciously stopping multiple times on Saturday 9 May 2020.
£314k Cash Found During Car Search
Police pulled over the car amid drug dealing suspicions. A thorough search uncovered two bags stuffed with £314,885 in cash. Lewis was promptly arrested but claimed he had no idea the money was in the car, insisting he’d only come to Kent to cut friends’ hair.
Taser Found at Suspect’s Home
A search of Lewis’ home in Crawley turned up a Taser weapon, adding to his trouble. He refused to explain how he came by the huge cash haul and stayed tight-lipped during police interviews.
Jailed for Two Years Over Cash and Weapon Charges
Lewis pleaded guilty to possession of criminal property and unlawful possession of a weapon at Canterbury Crown Court on 8 June. On 24 July, he was sentenced to two years and two months behind bars.
“Lewis was found in a hire car with a huge amount of money, the origin of which he has repeatedly refused to explain,” said Detective Inspector Emma Lawry.
“I would like to commend the alertness of our local officers on the night, which has resulted in a considerable amount of criminal property being removed from circulation.”
“Kent Police will not tolerate offenders coming into our county from other areas of the country and we will do everything we can to disrupt their operations and seize property.”
