Lockdown Easing Kicks Off Smoothly as Easter Sees Mostly Rule-Abiding Reunions
No Major Drama in Wiltshire as Rules Loosen
The first week of the Government’s latest lockdown roadmap stage passed without a hitch. Over Easter, most folks stuck to the new rules while catching up with friends and family outdoors.
Current guidelines allow outdoor meet-ups — including private gardens — in groups of up to six or two households. The strict “stay at home” rule is over. But people are still urged to work from home where possible and avoid busy travel times to keep virus spread in check.
Wiltshire Police Crack Down on Rule-Breakers
- Between 29 March and 5 April, Wiltshire Police handed out eight fixed penalty notices (FPNs), bringing the total to 861 so far.
- Two formal warnings were given to those flouting the regulations.
- Officers logged 277 public reports via phone and online.
- Only two Covid-related crimes and six incidents were recorded.
Officers stopped a car in Somerset Road, swindon/" title="Swindon" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Swindon early on 3 April, finding five young people aged 18-20 socialising inside — a big no-no. They were fined £200 each.
Authorities Praise Public, Issue Warning as Next Stage Approaches
Deputy Chief Constable Paul Mills said: “The first week of easing has gone smoothly. Thanks to everyone for sticking to the rules. Many enjoyed reunions outdoors over the bank holiday in groups of six or two households.”
“We had a peaceful, Covid-compliant protest in Swindon on Saturday.”
“Next Monday brings more reopenings — shops, hairdressers and outdoor hospitality. This is great news, but please stay sensible and vigilant to keep infection rates down.”
Police and Crime Commissioner Angus Macpherson added: “Relaxation is a huge positive for many, but Covid-19 is still with us. Keep your distance, wash hands often, and wear masks when needed.”
