Modern Slavery Victim Forced to Live Like a Slave on Sofa in Nottinghamshire
A vulnerable man was trapped in modern slavery, forced to endure long shifts and harsh conditions while pocketing just a fraction of his hard-earned pay. Elvis Scripcaru, 35, controlled every penny the victim earned—stealing thousands of pounds to bankroll his lavish family lifestyle.
From Romania to Exploitation in the UK
The 29-year-old victim was trafficked from Romania to the Republic of Ireland, then shipped by ferry to the UK, lured by promises of double pay and shorter hours. Instead, he found himself in Nottinghamshire, picking vegetables for just £8.40 an hour—only to have most of his wages siphoned off to cover transport, food, cigarettes, and rent.
He was crammed into a Radford house, forced to sleep on a sofa, and given just £30 a week to live on. Despite grinding through late shifts for six days each week, his wages went straight into Scripcaru’s account, leaving him with barely enough to survive.
Victim Speaks Out, Police Launch Complex Investigation
Desperate and starving, the victim reported the abuse to an agency that placed him at vegetable packing and chocolate factories in Nottingham and Derby. Police launched a detailed probe, combing through bank records and mobile phone data to expose Scripcaru’s crimes.
Of Falcon Grove in New Basford, Scripcaru was charged with trafficking for exploitation, forced labour, and possession of criminal property. At Nottingham Crown Court, he was found guilty on all counts and sentenced to over three years behind bars, along with a 10-year Slavery and Trafficking Prevention Order.
Police Warn: Exploiters Will Be Caught
“This was a really complex investigation,” said Detective Constable Matthew Wakeling. “The victim was targeted with false promises but ended up trapped, working long hours for little to no pay. We continue to support him through this.”
Detective Inspector Paul Lefford added: “This sentence sends a strong message. Exploiting others for profit will not be tolerated. Thanks to the Crown Prosecution Service, witness care, and the bravery of the victim returning from Romania to testify. We urge anyone with concerns about exploitation to contact the police or the Modern Slavery Helpline on 08000 121 700.”
This case shines a harsh spotlight on the hidden horrors of modern slavery in Nottinghamshire and serves as a warning: criminals who exploit the vulnerable will face justice.
