Blaze Rips Through Seven Hectares, 35 Homes Damaged
A huge fire tore through seven hectares of shrubs, waste land, and athletic fields, forcing 19 people to evacuate as a precaution. Around 35 homes have suffered damage, but thankfully no injuries have been reported.
Firefighters Battle Smoke and Flames Amid Growing Danger
More than 100 emergency calls flooded the Brigade’s 999 Control Officers after the blaze erupted. Station Commander Keith Sanders praised the crews’ efforts, saying: “Firefighters put in a lot of effort to contain the blaze while monitoring nearby homes and gardens for potential fire spread.”
Thick smoke billowed across the area, with winds pushing it towards rows of terraced homes. Sanders urged locals to stay clear and keep windows and doors shut to avoid smoke inhalation.
Swift Response from Multiple Fire Stations Puts Out Fire
The Brigade received the alert at 12:27pm and had the flames under control by 4:08pm. Firefighters from West Norwood, Mitcham, Wallington, Norbury, Woodside, and nearby stations all joined the fight.
The Metropolitan Police Service and the fire Brigade are now investigating what sparked the deadly blaze.
Fire Safety Tips: How to Avoid Grass Fires This Summer
- Don’t grill in parks, communal spaces, or on balconies where fire risks are high.
- Clear all glass bottles and objects — sunshine through glass can ignite fires.
- Never drop cigarettes on dry ground or out car windows; dispose of them safely.
- Keep barbecues attended at all times and fully extinguish when done.
- Put out disposable barbecues immediately and let them cool before binning.
- Avoid grilling on balconies, where wind can spread hot ash to dry grass.
- Have water or sand ready when grilling near dry vegetation.
- Be cautious in crowded areas; barbecues can be knocked over, sparking fires.
