Passport Fees Hit Brits With 7% Hike from April 2024
The British government is ready to slap on a hefty rise in passport application fees — over 7% more across the board. If MPs give the green light, these new costs will kick in from April 11, 2024.
How Much More Will You Pay?
The biggest jump is for online applications within the UK for anyone aged 16 and over. Prices will surge from £82.50 to £88.50. The government says this is to better match the real cost of processing passports and running related services.
- Standard online UK application: £88.50 for adults, £57.50 for kids
- Standard postal UK application: £100 for adults, £69 for kids
- Standard online overseas application: £101 for adults, £65.50 for kids
- Standard paper overseas application: £112.50 for adults, £77 for kids
Rising Fees, Rising Costs
This latest fee bump follows a hefty 9% hike that hit Brits just last February.
The Home Office explained the new charges aim to cover not just passport processing, but also consular support abroad and border security costs for British travellers. They apply to both new applicants and those renewing passports.
What About Processing Times?
Passports usually arrive within three weeks for UK applicants. But officials warn travellers to apply early to dodge delays.
As the nation braces for the rise, these fee increases highlight the government’s push to make passport services more sustainable — but it won’t come cheap for UK citizens.
