Forty firefighters, eight fire engines, and an aerial ladder were scrambled to attack a fierce early morning fire. The blaze erupted at the Italian restaurant Ciullõsteria on Balham High Road before spreading to the upper floors of the building.
Historic Eatery Damaged, Cause Unknown
The London Fire Brigade was called just after 4 a.m. to find a well-developed fire engulfing the premises. The Calcagno family, who have proudly owned Ciullõsteria for over 20 years, are facing a devastating loss.
The cause of the fire remains a mystery. An official investigation is underway as firefighters battle the flames with two hose reels and a covering jet. Teams in breathing apparatus scoured the residential properties above for any damage or casualties.

Fire Brigade Statement
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters responded to the fire on Balham High Road. We tackled the blaze at a ground-floor restaurant in a three-storey building with residences above. The fire was under control by 6.10 a.m. Fire crews from Tooting, Clapham, Battersea, and neighbouring stations worked tirelessly at the scene.”
