Cop Cleared of Assault in Shocking Off-Duty Row

Brighton Magistrates’ Court has cleared Detective Constable Thomas Hawkins of assault charges after a tense trial on March 17th. Hawkins was accused of attacking a woman he knew while off duty back in May 2022.

IOPC Steps In Before Court Drama

The case was flagged to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), who ordered a fresh probe by the force’s own Professional Standards Department. Hawkins denied the assault claim throughout the trial.

Not Guilty Verdict, But Disciplinary Action Looms

Despite being found not guilty in court, the police force isn’t dropping the matter. The Professional Standards Department is now reviewing the case to decide if disciplinary steps are still needed.
