Shock Probe Launched into Cops Who Failed to Stop Serial Rapist David Carrick
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has slammed the brakes on the scandal rocking the Met Police by launching investigations into 10 current and former officers and staff. They’re being grilled over their bungled handling of allegations against convicted serial rapist David Carrick.
10 Officers Under the Microscope
David Carrick, jailed for life in February for horrific sex attacks on 12 women over 17 years, abused his power as a police officer to commit these vile crimes. The IOPC is now firing up probes into five serving Met officers, including ranks from detective constable to chief inspector, all facing gross misconduct inquiries.
Also in the hot seat are a former Met officer now with the City of London Police" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">City of London Police, two retired Met officers, a serving Met staffer, and a serving police constable. They’ve all been told they’re under investigation for serious misconduct failures.
IOPC Demands Answers on ‘Multiple Failings’
IOPC Regional Director Mel Palmer said the watchdog’s review uncovered “multiple alleged failings” by police involved in the earlier investigations and assessments of Carrick’s crimes.
“If these matters had been properly dealt with at the time, Carrick might have been kicked out of the police years before his arrest,” Palmer said.
The Met’s Embarrassing Admission
The Met Police have publicly admitted they missed chances to identify Carrick through their internal misconduct process, sparking outrage. A Met spokesperson expressed deep regret and vowed to get tough on rotten apples.
“We are absolutely committed to rooting out those who corrupt our integrity and have no place in policing,” they said.
“We welcome independent scrutiny as we work to rebuild public trust in the Met.”
What Happens Next?
- The IOPC investigations will decide whether formal disciplinary action should be taken against the officers and staff involved.
- The Met urged the IOPC earlier this year to step in and review all handling of Carrick-related matters, signalling a serious shake-up is underway.
This saga exposes a shocking breach of trust inside the police force – and a bitter lesson on how vital timely action is to protect victims and public confidence.
