Vets Warn Against Feeding Dogs Christmas Treats Due to Toxicity Risks

As the festive season approaches, veterinarians are urging pet owners to exercise caution when feeding their dogs Christmas treats, highlighting the potential toxicity of several popular holiday foods.

Animal Friends Pet Insurance reported that during Christmas 2021, there was a significant spike in claims related to chocolate toxicity in dogs. Patricia Gardiner, CMO at Animal Friends, explained that chocolate contains theobromine, a chemical dogs cannot metabolize as humans do. This slower metabolism rate can lead to severe health issues in dogs.

However, chocolate is not the only food that poses a risk. Patricia Gardiner outlined several other holiday foods that are harmful to dogs:

  1. Gravy: Often high in fats and salts, gravy can also contain onions, which are toxic to dogs.
  2. Pigs in Blankets and Other Fatty Foods: Foods rich in fat, such as bacon, cheese, and cranberry sauce, can contribute to pet obesity and related health conditions.
  3. Stuffing: A common side dish at Christmas dinners, stuffing often contains onions and garlic. Garlic contains thiosulfate, which damages red blood cells in dogs.
  4. Mince Pies and Other Puddings: These desserts typically contain mincemeat, currants, raisins, and sultanas, all of which are toxic to dogs. Some may also contain alcohol, further increasing the risk.

The symptoms of food poisoning in dogs can vary but often include hyperactivity, diarrhea, vomiting, increased drinking and urination, tummy pain, muscle tremors, twitching, seizures, and being warm to touch. It’s important to note that some signs of poisoning might not appear until 24 hours after ingestion.

Pet owners are advised to avoid giving their dogs any of these foods and to closely monitor their pets for any signs of distress. In case of suspected poisoning, immediate veterinary attention is crucial. This Christmas, pet owners are encouraged to keep their furry friends safe by sticking to dog-safe treats and maintaining a vigilant eye on any accessible food items.
