Massive Vehicle Blaze Blocks M20 Motorway
A huge fire has brought the M20 motorway to a standstill, sparking chaos for drivers. The Londonbound carriageway is completely blocked between Junction 9 at Ashford and Junction 8 near Maidstone services.
Traffic at a Complete Standstill
Photos from the scene show a thick plume of smoke rising above rows of stationary cars. The fire, described as “massive,” has forced all lanes to close, causing heavy disruption.
Motorists took to social media to warn others to avoid the area, urging drivers not to approach from junction 123 ahead.
Smoke Causes Congestion Coastbound, Too
Traffic heading coastbound is also crawling as drivers slow down to stare at the blaze. This has worsened the gridlock in both directions.
“Fire on M20 two miles west of Jn 9 Londonbound, but other carriageway stopped for safety due to smoke. Fire, police, and traffic officers in attendance,” reported one eyewitness online.
Emergency Services Battle Blaze, Manage Chaos
Two fire engines, a height vehicle, police, and Highways England traffic officers rushed to the scene on Wheelers Lane in Maidstone. Authorities are actively working to control the fire and clear congestion.
Officials have been contacted for more information and will update the public as the situation develops.
