IOPC Launches Investigation After Man Dies in Swindon Custody

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has initiated a probe following the tragic death of a man in custody at Gablecross Police Station in Swindon. The incident unfolded earlier today, prompting swift action from emergency services.

At approximately 7:30 a.m. this morning (Sunday), Wiltshire Air Ambulance and ambulance crews were dispatched to Gablecross Police Station in response to reports of a medical emergency involving a man in his 30s. Despite extensive efforts from emergency responders, the man, who had been arrested and detained, succumbed to his condition.

The closure of the custody suite was enforced as part of the investigation by the IOPC, leading to the transfer of detainees to Melksham custody. Additionally, frontline officers have been cautioned against making non-essential arrests, and all voluntary attendance interviews have been cancelled.

Superintendent Steve Cox of Wiltshire Police confirmed the incident, expressing condolences and affirming the initiation of a mandatory referral to the IOPC. Cox refrained from further commentary, respecting the ongoing investigation.

This development follows closely on the heels of the recent reopening of the Melksham custody suite, which underwent extensive refurbishment. The closure of Gablecross Police Station’s custody suite for investigative purposes may extend for a significant duration as authorities conduct thorough inquiries.

As investigations progress, updates will be provided by relevant authorities. The community is urged to respect the privacy of the affected individuals and to cooperate with the investigative process.

For further information or inquiries regarding the investigation, individuals are advised to contact the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
