NHS Issues Urgent Blood Appeal After Hack Hits London Hospitals

The NHS has launched an emergency call for blood donors after a ruthless cyber attack left London’s top hospitals in chaos. The ransomware strike on Tuesday targeted Synnovis, a vital pathology partner, crippling blood matching services and halting critical patient care.

Major Hospitals Hit by Cyber Attack

King’s College Hospital, Guy’s and St Thomas’, the Royal Brompton, and Evelina London Children’s Hospital have all been affected. The attack forced cancellation of numerous procedures, as hospitals now struggle to safely match blood for transfusions.

Russian Hackers Blamed—Blood Stocks Running Low

Cybercriminal gang Qilin is suspected behind the breach. NHS Blood and Transplant urgently needs O-Positive and O-Negative donors to step up and book appointments at any of London’s 25 donor centres. Blood stocks have already been battered by recent bank holidays and half-term breaks, making the situation critical.

Why O-Negative and O-Positive Donors are Vital

  • O-Negative: The universal donor type, essential in emergencies because it can be given to anyone.
  • O-Positive: The most common blood type, suitable for 76% of the population.

Blood only lasts 35 days, meaning constant donations are needed to keep up with surgeries and treatments.

Experts Sound the Alarm

“To support London hospitals to carry out more surgeries and provide the best care, we need more O-Negative and O-Positive donors than usual. Please book an urgent appointment at one of our donor centres,” said Dr Gail Miflin, NHS Blood and Transplant’s chief medical officer.

Professor Stephen Powis, NHS England’s medical director, added: “Our staff are working tirelessly to reduce disruption but several operations have been postponed. Urgent and emergency services remain open.”

The NHS is calling on existing and first-time donors alike to help restock these precious supplies. To make it easy, 13,000 appointments across London’s donor centres are available now.
