First Conviction Hits Rotherham Riots
Joshua Simpson, 25, a self-employed builder, has become the first person nailed for the recent Rotherham riots. The currently homeless man admitted assaulting an emergency worker during the chaos.
Violence Caught on Camera
Simpson showed up after watching the unrest unfold on video. As crowds thinned, he jeered at police before kicking a riot shield and shoving it hard into an officer’s leg, injuring them. The court heard how his aggression turned physical quickly.
Judge Warns Jail Time Possible
Deputy District Judge Simon Blakebrough demanded a pre-sentence report but made it clear jail remains on the table. He said he “could not rule out” a custodial sentence. Simpson is now in custody, awaiting sentencing on August 27.
More Prosecutions Loom
Simpson’s conviction marks the first criminal fallout from the Rotherham riots. Authorities are expected to crack down hard, sending a strong message against violence, especially targeting emergency workers during public disorder.
“Those who attack emergency personnel will face serious legal consequences,” said the judge.
