Police Appeal for Witnesses Following Suspected Arson Attack in Rochdale

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) are appealing for witnesses after a suspected arson attack at a property on Halifax Road in Rochdale. The incident occurred at around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, 4 September. Emergency services responded to the scene, where five people, including three children, were treated for injuries. Fortunately, none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.

Initial investigations suggest the fire may have been started deliberately, but no arrests have yet been made. An active investigation is underway, and police are urging anyone who may have been in the area at the time to come forward with any information that could assist with the case.

Detective Inspector Katie Buntine, from GMP’s Rochdale district, described the incident as “disturbing,” emphasizing that the fire placed a family and young children at serious risk of harm. She confirmed that officers will remain at the scene throughout the day to conduct further investigations and provide reassurance to the local community.

DI Buntine appealed to the public for help in identifying those responsible, saying: “Were you in the area last night and perhaps saw something that seemed suspicious? No matter how small the information may seem, it may be crucial to our investigation.” She also urged anyone with relevant dashcam footage from vehicles passing through the area, including taxis and buses, to come forward, as it may provide vital evidence.

“We are committed to identifying those responsible for this reckless behaviour, which could have had devastating consequences for this family, and ensuring that they face justice,” DI Buntine added.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact GMP on 0161 856 8519, quoting reference 3525 of 04/09/24. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously through Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111 or via the GMP website at gmp.police.uk.

The investigation is ongoing, and officers are hopeful that public cooperation will help bring those responsible to justice.
