Grandad Found Dead in Cell After Anti-Immigration Riot Conviction

Peter Lynch, 61, a grandfather jailed for violent disorder at an anti-immigration protest, was found dead in his prison cell at HMP Moorland, South Yorkshire. Authorities believe he took his own life on Saturday night.

Convicted for Violent Clash at Asylum Seeker Hotel

Lynch was sentenced to two years and eight months on August 22 after pleading guilty to violent disorder during a riot at a hotel housing asylum seekers in Rotherham.

  • During the incident on August 4, Lynch reportedly abused police officers and incited violence.
  • At Sheffield Crown Court, he was described as a conspiracy theorist who confronted officers with a placard accusing MPs, police, and media of corruption.

Prison Launches Probe Into Death

Staff at HMP Moorland found Lynch unresponsive in his cell last weekend.

The prison confirmed an investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances of his death. Lynch’s family has been informed and offered support.

Anti-Immigration Protests Stir Controversy

The August riot was part of a series of protests against housing asylum seekers in local hotels. These demonstrations were marked by aggressive behaviour, clashes with police, and property damage.

A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: “We are aware of the tragic death of an inmate at HMP Moorland. Our sympathies are with the family of the deceased, and we are cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.”

Authorities confirmed a coroner’s inquest will follow, alongside a review of prison safety protocols.
