Man Dies After Car Plunges into the Sea at Gurnard

A man in his 40s from Ryde has tragically died after his car plunged into the sea near Gurnard late on Saturday night (30 November).

Emergency services were called to Shore Road, close to the local sailing club, just before 11:30 pm, following reports of a vehicle entering the water. Responders, including police, firefighters, paramedics, and HM Coastguard, rushed to the scene.

Upon arrival, a green Ford Mondeo was found in the water. Fire crews worked quickly to secure the vehicle using a strop, and the driver was pulled from the car. Despite the best efforts of emergency personnel, the man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Search for Additional Occupants

Concerns that there may have been other passengers led to an extensive search of the area by HM Coastguard. However, it has been confirmed that no other individuals were in the vehicle or the surrounding area at the time of the incident.

Investigation Underway

Police have launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the tragedy, including whether the car was deliberately driven into the water or if it was an accident. Specialist collision investigators were deployed to the scene before first light to conduct a detailed forensic examination.

The man’s next of kin have been informed, and a file is being prepared for the coroner.

Appeal for Witnesses

Officers are appealing to the public for information regarding the incident. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has relevant details is urged to contact police.
