Scam Alert in Barking and Dagenham: Fake QR Codes Target Drivers
Barking and Dagenham Council has issued an urgent warning after fake QR codes were found slapped onto parking meters across the borough. These fraudulent codes direct unsuspecting drivers to dodgy websites designed to swipe bank details.
Fraudsters Target Parking Meters
Residents and visitors are being urged to steer clear of any QR codes placed over official PayByPhone signs. The council confirmed its enforcement officers are removing these bogus codes on sight but stress that motorists must stay sharp.
A council spokesperson said:
“We’ve been made aware that QR codes are still being placed on top of some PayByPhone signage. Officers are removing them when identified.”
“These QR codes take you to a fake website, asking for your bank details. We strongly advise residents and visitors to avoid scanning any QR codes and to only use the PayByPhone app or phone number to pay for parking.”
How to Dodge the Scam
- Never scan QR codes on parking meters or signage.
- Stick to the official PayByPhone app or call the number displayed on the meter.
- Check URLs carefully before entering any personal or payment info.
- Report suspicious QR codes straight to the council or local police.
