Two Arrested as Bank Staff Stop Elderly Woman from Losing £3,400 in Fraud Attempt
Suspicious Withdrawal Sparks Alarm
Bank staff in Borehamwood stepped up to stop a pensioner handing over more than £3,000 to a dodgy cleaning firm. A woman in her 70s tried to withdraw £3,400, claiming it was to pay for a deep clean of her home. The staff smelled a rat and quickly alerted the police.
Unwanted Cleaners Raise Red Flags
The cleaning company had already sent workers uninvited to the woman’s home without agreeing a price. When the bank initially refused the withdrawal, the woman returned with a 36-year-old woman from Radlett. Police swooped and arrested the Radlett woman on suspicion of fraud. A 42-year-old man from Radlett was also arrested in connection with the case.
Police Praise Sharp-Eyed Bank Staff
Detective Constable David Lancaster from the Case Investigation Team praised the bank for acting fast. He warned the public about cash scams targeting vulnerable people.
“Fraudsters often trick victims into withdrawing large sums of cash and handing it over,” said DC Lancaster. “Once they have the cash, it’s hard to trace or recover.”
“From rogue builders to fake bank alerts, these scams mainly prey on the elderly and vulnerable.”
“If bank staff question you, don’t be offended – they’re protecting you and your money.”
Investigation Ongoing – Families Urged to Stay Alert
Police confirm their enquiries continue as both suspects remain under investigation. The incident is a sharp warning for families to watch out for signs of financial abuse among elderly relatives.
