Former Teacher at Darul Uloom London Banned After Misconduct Ruling Over Pupil Mistreatment and Concealed Convictions

A teacher who forced a pupil to wait outside his office for 13 hours and concealed criminal convictions has been banned from teaching indefinitely following a misconduct hearing by the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA).

Yusuf Musal, 32, a former staff member and safeguarding lead at Darul Uloom London, a private boys’ boarding school, was found guilty of unacceptable professional conduct.

The incident occurred on December 19, 2017, when Mr Musal made a student wait outside from 8am until 9pm as punishment for not attending a mandatory morning prayer. He denied the allegation, but the tribunal ruled he had “exposed the pupil to harm or a risk of harm.”

Weapons Found at Teacher’s Flat

The panel also reviewed concerns over bladed weapons found at Mr Musal’s school accommodation, including three samurai swords and a hawk handle knife. While Mr Musal insisted these were “historical and decorative replicas” and securely kept in a locked flat, the tribunal accepted his explanation and found this did not pose a risk to pupils.

Altercation and Police Response

In another incident on May 30, 2018, Mr Musal was involved in a heated altercation with delivery drivers on school grounds, which escalated to the point where armed police were called. The panel found he had used profanity during the confrontation but no charges were brought.

An allegation involving an imitation firearm on school property was not proven, as the TRA presented no evidence.

Dishonesty and Safeguarding Allegations

The tribunal found Mr Musal acted dishonestly by failing to declare prior driving convictions when he first applied to work at the school in 2011. He later became the school’s designated safeguarding lead.

One safeguarding allegation related to an indecent image reported anonymously in 2017 was not upheld, as the panel found the “stem” of the claim was not proven.

Banned from Teaching

In a written decision published on Tuesday, Marc Cavey, on behalf of the Secretary of State for Education, imposed an indefinite teaching ban on Mr Musal, with a review allowed only after three years.

The panel noted Mr Musal is no longer involved with the school, having been removed as a trustee and agreed to cease all association with Darul Uloom London under an undisclosed agreement with the Department for Education.
