Teacher Banned After Forcing Student to Wait 13 Hours and Hiding Criminal Past
A teacher who made a pupil wait outside his office for a staggering 13 hours and concealed his criminal convictions has been banned from teaching for life. The Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) handed down the indefinite ban following a damning misconduct hearing.
Yusuf Musal’s Shocking Punishment
Yusuf Musal, 32, former safeguarding lead at Darul Uloom London, a private boys’ boarding school, was found guilty of unacceptable professional conduct. On December 19, 2017, Musal forced a student to stand outside his office from 8am to 9pm as punishment for missing mandatory morning prayers. Though he denied the claim, the tribunal ruled he “exposed the pupil to harm or a risk of harm.”
Bladed Weapons Discovered in Teacher’s Flat
The panel also examined the discovery of weapons at Musal’s school accommodation. Three samurai swords and a hawk-handle knife were found in his locked flat. Musal claimed these were “historical and decorative replicas.” The tribunal accepted this and concluded the weapons did not pose a risk to pupils.
Schoolyard Row Sparks Police Call-Out
On May 30, 2018, Musal clashed with delivery drivers on school grounds. The heated altercation escalated so much that armed police were called. The panel found that Musal used profanity but noted no charges were filed. An allegation involving an imitation firearm on school property was also investigated but not proven due to lack of evidence.
Dishonesty & Safeguarding Failures Exposed
The tribunal revealed Musal acted dishonestly by failing to disclose prior driving convictions when joining the school in 2011. Shockingly, he later became the designated safeguarding lead. An anonymous allegation about an indecent image from 2017 was also considered but ultimately not upheld, as the core claim was unproven.
Indefinite Ban and End of School Ties
Marc Cavey, representing the Secretary of State, imposed the indefinite teaching ban, with a possible review only after three years. Musal has been removed as a trustee and has agreed to sever all links with Darul Uloom London under an agreement with the Department for Education.
This ruling ends Musal’s career in education and sends a strong message about safeguarding standards and integrity in schools.
