Snaresbrook Crown Court Drowns in Record Backlog – 4,185 Cases Await Trial
Snaresbrook Crown Court is now the busiest court in England and Wales by far, with a staggering 4,185 cases waiting for trial as of January 31, 2025. That’s a 45% bigger backlog than runner-up Wood Green Crown Court, highlighting a criminal justice system in crisis, especially in East London.
Backlog Hits Crisis Point
Just a year ago, Snaresbrook had 3,286 cases pending. Now it’s ballooned to over 4,100 – nearly double Wood Green’s 2,313. The pressure on crown courts is intensifying, pushing the system to breaking point.
Courts and Legal Services Minister Sarah Sackman KC warned:
“At its current rate, the national backlog could hit 100,000 cases by 2028—a year earlier than previously predicted.”
“Despite the dedication of those in the system, crown courts are struggling. It’s simply unacceptable that victims are waiting years for justice.”
Calls for Radical Court Reforms
The government has tasked Sir Brian Leveson with a major review of the court system. The Leveson Review is expected to suggest sweeping changes and is due out in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, Mary Prior KC, head of the Criminal Bar Association, demanded urgent action:
“We don’t have the luxury of time. Courtrooms currently closed must be reopened now or victims and defendants risk abandoning their cases altogether.”
“Radical reforms will take at least a year. But justice must come in months, not years.”
More Than Backlogs: Jail Overcrowding and Sentencing Delays
The backlog figures come amid rising concerns about prison overcrowding and slow sentencing. The government is working on implementing recommendations from former Justice Secretary David Gauke’s sentencing review.
Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood admitted the scale of the problem, even after announcing a record 110,000 judicial sitting days next year:
“The sad reality is the backlog will still go up.”
Why It Matters: Justice Delayed Is Justice Denied
The mounting delays are a disaster for victims, defendants, and public trust. Legal pros warn that prolonged waits only add trauma and undermine faith in the justice system.
While the Leveson Review looms, pressure mounts for immediate steps to speed up trials, reduce trauma, and restore confidence in the criminal courts.
