Covid Rules Broken on Duty at Bethnal Green Station
Thirty-one Metropolitan Police officers face £200 fixed penalty notices after flouting Covid-19 rules while on duty. The scandal unfolded at Bethnal Green 1 station on Sunday, 17 January, when the officers were caught having haircuts from a professional barber inside the station.
Two Officers Under Misconduct Investigation
An internal probe, dubbed Local 1, swiftly launched after an allegation surfaced about the “lockdown haircut” session. While all 31 officers who got haircuts will be fined, two key suspects who helped organise the event now face separate misconduct investigations.
Commander Slams ‘Poor Decision’ by Officers
“It is deeply disappointing and frustrating that my officers have fallen short of the expectation to uphold Covid-19 regulations,” said Detective Chief Superintendent Marcus Barnett.
“Although officers donated money to 1 as part of the haircut, this does not excuse them from what was a very poor decision. I expect a lot more of them.”
“The public rightly expect police to be role models in following the rules to stop the spread of this deadly virus. This fine and misconduct action shows police aren’t above the law and will face consequences for irresponsible behaviour.”
