Tesla Semi Crashes on California Freeway, Sparks Massive Fire
In the early hours of Monday, August 19, 2024, a 2024 Tesla Semi electric truck crashed hard on Interstate 80 near Emigrant Gap, California. The battery-powered beast, driven by a Tesla staffer, veered off a highway curve just after 3 a.m. heading east from Livermore to Sparks, Nevada.
Out-of-Control Truck Slams into Tree and Catches Fire
The Tesla Semi lost control on a right-hand uphill bend, smashing a roadside traffic post before crashing into a tree. The 18-wheeler then tumbled down a slope and came to rest wrapped around several trees. The big lithium-ion battery pack ignited, triggering a serious post-crash blaze. Luckily, the driver escaped unhurt.
Firefighters Battle Blaze, Tesla Sends Expert
Emergency crews – California Highway Patrol, CAL FIRE, and Caltrans – raced to the scene to douse the flames. Tesla sent a tech expert to tackle the high-voltage battery hazards. Firefighters poured around 50,000 gallons of water onto the truck’s battery to cool it down and extinguish the fire. CAL FIRE even dropped fire retardant via aircraft to stop flames spreading to nearby forests.
Long Road to Safety and Traffic Chaos
The crash shut both lanes of I-80 for up to 15 hours, causing major traffic chaos. Authorities used thermal scanners to monitor the batteries, preventing any chance of reignition. The Tesla Semi was moved to an open-air area for a full 24-hour observation period – no further battery issues were reported.
This incident highlights the tricky reality of electric vehicle fires. While EVs promise a greener future, their battery fires require huge firefighting efforts, significant resources, and plenty of caution to keep everyone safe.
