WW2 Bomb Sparks Major Incident in Great Yarmouth
Emergency services have declared a major incident in Norfolk after a suspected World War Two bomb was found in Great Yarmouth this morning (Tuesday 7 January 2023). Army bomb disposal experts are on site, with a 400-metre cordon in place. Residents within the zone have been urged to evacuate immediately as a precaution.
Road Closures and Evacuation Orders Hit Area
Several roads around the discovery site have been shut down, causing major disruption. Officials warn these closures will last at least 24 hours while the bomb squad works to neutralise the threat.
- Southtown Road closed from its junction with 1 Road to Beccles Road
- Partial closures on Litchfield Road and Boundary Road (off Southtown Road)
- Williams Adam Way and Tollgate Road fully closed
Pedestrians and motorists are advised to avoid the area entirely.
Safety First: Rest Centres Open for Evacuated Locals
Rest centres have opened for displaced residents at:
- St Georges Theatre, King Street, Great Yarmouth
- Mesh – Shrublands Youth and Adult Centre, Magdalen Way, Gorleston
Chief Inspector Matt Dyson said: “Our priority will always be public safety. We’re working closely with army experts to safely resolve this incident. We understand the disruption this causes but these measures are essential.”
Police and council staff are checking on vulnerable people in affected homes to offer support.
