Operation Brock to hit M20 from Monday, 16 December as Kent braces for Christmas traffic chaos. The contraflow system aims to keep things moving during peak holiday travel.

- London-bound: Closed from junction 9 to junction 8
- Coastbound: Closed from junction 7 to junction 9
Closures run from 8 PM Sunday until 6 AM Monday. Drivers must stick to fully signed diversions; ignore SatNavs to avoid chaos.
How Operation Brock Works
The contraflow covers 13 miles of the M20 between junctions 8 and 9. It’s designed to ease traffic strains from port delays at Dover and Eurotunnel.
- HGVs heading to Dover or Eurotunnel must join Operation Brock at Junction 8.
- All other coastbound traffic including local freight and cars must switch over to the London-bound carriageway and follow contraflow signage.
Heads Up for Drivers
Sean Martell, National Highways’ Head of Service Delivery for the South East, warned: “Operation Brock helps us keep the country moving during busy times at Kent’s ports. If you’re travelling to the continent this Christmas, plan your journey with our TRIP guidance, check with your travel operator, and allow extra time. Carry essentials like food, water, and fuel for winter travel.”
Plan Ahead to Avoid Disruption
The overnight closure has been scheduled to limit impact. Get updates and plan ahead at the National Highways website.
