Central Europe Floods: Torrential Rains Spark Mass Evacuations

Torrential downpours have unleashed brutal flooding across Central Europe, with the Czech Republic bearing the brunt. Record-breaking rain has pushed rivers to dangerous levels, forcing thousands to flee their homes. And experts warn the nightmare is far from over, with more heavy rain due tonight.

Emergency Evacuations and Transport Chaos

Nearly 90 flood warnings have been issued, especially around the Jeseniky Mountains near the Polish border. In Opava, up to 10,000 residents were evacuated as the swollen Opava River inundated entire neighbourhoods. Boats are now ferrying people to safety.

“There’s no reason to wait,” Mayor Tomáš Navrátil urged on Czech public radio. “This is worse than the floods of 1997 – the so-called flood of the century.”

Prime Minister Petr Fiala echoed the grim warning: “The worst is not behind us yet.” His government promises a damage assessment on Monday.

Widespread Devastation and Tragic Losses

  • Evacuations also underway in Krnov, Cesky Tesin, and Ostrava – the country’s third-largest city.
  • The Oder River surge has sparked major transport shutdowns, halting most train services in Ostrava.
  • Floodwaters have cut off Jesenik town and nearby villages; the military is airlifting stranded residents as bridges collapse.
  • Four people are missing after being swept away by raging floods.
  • Over 260,000 homes are without power across the region.
  • In Austria’s Lower Austria, a firefighter died battling floodwaters in Tulln. The area is now a disaster zone with 1,100+ homes evacuated.

Flood Havoc Spreads Across Central Europe

The flooding crisis is not just confined to the Czech Republic. Romania, Poland, Germany, Slovakia, Hungary, and Austria are also battling record high waters and evacuations.

Poland’s Klodzko was badly hit, with one missing person presumed dead. The town of Glucholazy has flooded streets and homes, prompting mayors to urgently demand evacuations.

Extreme Weather Driven by Rare Low-Pressure System

This relentless rain stems from a rare low-pressure system sweeping north from Italy. It follows a scorching start to September, adding to the devastation after Earth’s hottest summer on record, shattered just last year.

With more rain gushing in, Central Europe faces a perilous wait as authorities race against the rising tides.
