Anti-terrorism police have been called in to investigate a shocking incident in Sidcup where an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was used to destroy a ULEZ camera

The explosion, which occurred on Wednesday, sent burning shrapnel flying across a London neighbourhood, terrifying residents with its ‘deafening’ blast.

The attack took place in a residential area in Sidcup, where locals compared the explosion to a ‘bomb going off. Police have confirmed that the incident was a deliberate act carried out using a ‘low-sophistication’ IED. Officers with expertise in explosives are now spearheading the investigation.

The use of IEDs, typically associated with roadside and building attacks in conflict zones like Iraq and Afghanistan, represents a disturbing escalation in the vandalism of ULEZ cameras. Since their introduction by Sadiq Khan, these cameras have faced routine targeting by vandals dubbed ‘Blade Runners’, protesting the new fees imposed on non-compliant vehicles.

The explosion resulted in considerable damage, with several vehicles being hit by the debris. Forensic officers were seen conducting a detailed investigation at the site.

While the attack is currently not being treated as an act of terrorism, police warn that it could have easily led to severe injuries or worse for nearby residents or pedestrians. The seriousness of the incident has warranted the involvement of Counter Terrorism Command due to their expertise in handling explosives.

Detective Chief Superintendent Trevor Lawry, Commander for the Bexley area, expressed relief that no injuries resulted from the incident but emphasized the potential danger to the public. “This was an extremely dangerous incident that could have resulted in innocent members of the public being injured or worse,” he said, urging anyone with information to come forward.

The explosion occurred after the ULEZ camera was allegedly cut down hours after installation, leading to speculation about the cause of the blast. The level of police presence and the nature of the investigation have fueled concerns among residents about the possibility of a homemade bomb.

The Metropolitan Police are currently pursuing a criminal investigation, with forensic teams conducting a thorough search for evidence at the scene. The road remains cordoned off as the investigation continues.

No arrests have been made yet, but the police have appealed to the public for any information that might assist in their inquiries. Residents in the vicinity have reported significant disruption and concern following the explosion, with damage to property and a lingering sense of unease.

The incident raises important questions about the security and safety of public infrastructure, particularly in light of the increasing tension surrounding ULEZ enforcement measures.
