Boxing Day Inferno Claims Mother and Two Kids as Dad Battles for Life
Tragic Blaze Devastates Family in Stroud
A heart-breaking Boxing Day fire tore through a home in Brimscombe Hill near Stroud, killing a mother and her two young children. Fionnghuala Shearman, 38, known as Nu, lost her life alongside her 7-year-old daughter Eve and 4-year-old son Ohner in the raging inferno.
Their mid-terrace Cotswold stone cottage was gutted, with the roof collapsing and ceilings and stairs caving in, leaving nothing but devastation in its wake.
Fionnghuala’s husband, Tom Shearman, a Gloucestershire police officer, managed to escape the blaze but remains hospitalised as he fights to recover from injuries sustained during his desperate rescue attempt. The couple had been married for around ten years.
Heroic Dad’s Rescue Bid Blocked by Ferocious Flames
Tom Shearman bravely tried to reach his children by climbing through the bedroom window, but the intense fire stopped him in his tracks. He smashed through the bathroom window and repeatedly tried to break back inside, but the blazing heat and smoke kept him from reaching the bedrooms.
“They have been unable to get to the back bedroom due to the voracity of the fire,” said Detective Superintendent Ian Fletcher. “The father has smashed his way out of the house through a bathroom window in order to try to access the children’s bedroom via the outside. He has been unable to enter the property via that bedroom window.”
Emergency teams were called just after 3am but the fire was already well alight. Police ruled out suspicious circumstances, with investigations ongoing.
Shocked Community Mourns Unthinkable Loss
Neighbours and friends were left stunned by the tragedy. One local described the incident as “absolutely shocking” and “dreadful.” “We are all shellshocked to be honest with you. We don’t know what happened,” they added.
Fionnghuala, a talented artisan who ran the handmade canvas and leather bag company Hide and Hammer, had recently paused her business for a short break. She enjoyed running alongside her husband and was well-known in the community.
Local Green Party councillor Chloe Turner has called for anyone with information to come forward and offered support to grieving families. “My thoughts are very much with everyone impacted by this tragic incident,” she said.
As investigations continue amid the dangerous, unstable wreckage, the tight-knit community is left heartbroken by the devastating loss of a young family on what should have been a day of celebration.
