Huge Cocaine Bust at Sydney Airport: Five Men Charged Over $40 Million Drug Haul
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) have struck a major blow against organised crime, charging five men linked to smuggling nearly 100kg of cocaine into Australia on a passenger plane from South Africa.
Key Players Nabbed at Court
The suspects appeared before Parramatta Local Court on Sunday and are being held in custody until their next hearing on 30 November 2023.
- 42-year-old Padstow man: Alleged mastermind who coordinated with global crime networks to source, load, and distribute the cocaine across Australia.
- 62-year-old Hillsdale man: Accused of managing two airport workers who secured the drugs from the plane and passed them on to an associate.
- 55-year-old Mascot man and 61-year-old Coogee man: Freight handlers at Sydney Airport who helped remove five big bags of cocaine from cargo containers.
- 24-year-old Sydney man: Took delivery of the drugs on behalf of the Padstow figure.
Operation Lucian: Year-Long Sting Unravels Airport Drug Scheme
The AFP’s Operation Lucian kicked off in October 2022 after an airline tipped them off about suspicious activity near a cargo hold of a Johannesburg-to-Sydney flight.
Investigators tracked the accused to various Sydney suburbs and swooped in with four search warrants at homes in Coogee, Mascot, and Hillsdale. A stash of drugs and several electronic gadgets were seized during the raids.
AFP Warns on Airport Corruption and Organised Crime
Detective Superintendent Kristie Cressy said: “Transnational organised crime gangs exploit airport staff to smuggle drugs. We’re committed to disrupting these syndicates who threaten Australia’s national security, economy, and communities.”
“We treat cases like this as a top priority and will continue to prosecute those who betray positions of trust to profit from crime.”
The seized cocaine, packed in five bags with roughly 20kg each, has an estimated street value of a staggering $40 million – enough for 100,000 street deals.
The trio caught at the airport face charges of importing and possessing commercial quantities of cocaine, punishable by life imprisonment. The Padstow and Hillsdale men are charged with conspiracy to import the drug, facing the same maximum penalty.
