A cruise holiday took a dramatic turn after a passenger suffered a medical emergency and had to be airlifted from the Celebrity Solstice while the ship was sailing near Canada.

The Royal Canadian Air Force was called in after it was determined the passenger required additional medical treatment.

A military helicopter and rescue team were deployed to the cruise ship, with search and rescue technicians lowered onto the vessel to assist with the evacuation.

The passenger was then winched from the Celebrity Solstice and flown ashore for hospital treatment.

A Royal Caribbean Group spokesperson said: “A guest experienced a medical emergency while sailing. Since they required additional care, we facilitated their medical disembarkation.”

The nature of the passenger’s medical emergency and their subsequent condition were not disclosed in the report.

Celebrity Solstice is operated by Celebrity Cruises, part of Royal Caribbean Group.
