A teenager has been returned to custody less than 24 hours after plain-clothes British Transport Police officers caught him carrying a six-inch dagger at Stratford station.
Walter de Carvalho, 18, of Ashcroft Road in Medway, pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article and was sentenced to eight months in a Young Offender Institution at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 10 September.
The court heard de Carvalho had previously been sentenced to 46 months in custody in January for the sale of weapons and firearms and was on licence when he encountered officers from BTP’s County Lines Taskforce on Wednesday, 9 September.
Plain-clothes officers spotted the teenager at Stratford station and stopped him.
A small quantity of cannabis was found during the initial encounter, prompting officers to carry out a further search.
Despite repeatedly telling officers he was not carrying a weapon, police discovered a six-inch dagger concealed inside his tracksuit bottoms.
De Carvalho was arrested at the scene and charged later the same day with possession of a bladed article.
He was also recalled to prison for breaching the conditions of his licence.
Less than 24 hours after being stopped at the station, he appeared before magistrates, admitted the knife offence and was handed the eight-month custodial sentence.
